Writing and Spelling
The ability to write fluently and with purpose is a fundamental skill, which is used across the curriculum and throughout a child’s schooling (and beyond!). Access to high quality texts provides models for our pupils to learn from and helps to scaffold their own compositions. Creative approaches to teaching, such as opportunities for role play, debates and drama, enable our pupils to develop their spoken language and plan ideas before the writing process begins.
Our writing lessons are carefully planned and sequenced following a scheme called “The Write Stuff” (Jane Considine). The process involves modelled, shared and guided writing opportunities which enable pupils to understand and apply grammar and punctuation effectively, broaden their vocabulary and explore high quality texts in depth, deepening their understanding of the features of a range of different text types.
In EYFS and Key Stage 1 we provide daily, systematic, high-quality phonics teaching following the “Bug Club Phonics” scheme (Pearson). Pupils are taught new skills, as well as being offered opportunities to revise and practise previous learning. Our programme ensures that pupils write with purpose every day, developing their skills and deepening their knowledge. Further up the school, daily spelling lessons are delivered using the "No Nonsense Spelling" scheme, which encourages an investigative approach, as well as fluency practice.
