Computing

At Enstone Primary School, we want our pupils to become successful digital citizens at school and into their future workplaces and lives.

Understanding and using computers and information technology starts right from the beginning in our Reception class.  Pupils will access toys and resources such as Bee Bots and Robo Mice, that begin to teach them the rudiments of programming.  They will use digital photography to capture and represent their ideas, and they will learn about how technology is used in many aspects of our lives as part of the "Knowledge and Understanding of the World" strand of the EYFS Curriculum.

From Year 1 to Year 6, our computing curriculum is taught using the Purple Mash scheme of learning, with knowledge and skills being developed and built upon each year. We also embed computing throughout all areas of our curriculum, thereby ensuring that pupils are able to apply their technological knowledge and skills in a wide range of different contexts.

The Computing curriculum is divided into three areas as follows:

  • Digital Literacy/E-Safety: Children need to be able to use technology safely. They need to keep their personal information private and treat other people with respect. If something goes wrong or they see something they don’t like they should know what to do and where to go for help. Units of teaching in computing always start with a refresher on E-Safety.
  • Computer Science: Central to the computing curriculum is Computer Science, in which students are taught the principles of information and computation, how digital systems work, and how to put this knowledge to use through programming.
  • Information Technology: This strand of the curriculum ensures that pupils learn to create, retrieve, combine and manipulate digital content. Pupils are taught about computer networks, the world wide web and the internet and how they operate. Pupils are given opportunities to apply IT across all other subject areas.
