Mathematics

At Enstone Primary School, exploration and discovery are at the heart of our curriculum. Our maths curriculum is designed to provide children with the opportunity to expand upon and develop their mental maths skills and prepare them for the variety of problem-solving opportunities that they will encounter in their lives.

Our Whole-School Maths Vision is:

  • To foster positive attitudes, fascination and excitement of discovery through the teaching and learning of mathematical concepts.
  • To develop a ‘can do’ attitude in our children, especially when problem solving.
  • To broaden children’s knowledge and understanding of how mathematics is used in the wider world by making rich and varied real life connections.
  • To enable our pupils to confidently reason about their mathematics, using a suitable range of mathematical language, recognising its importance for communication and deep thinking.
  • To use a wide range of models, visual manipulatives and practical resources to develop a deep conceptual understanding alongside procedural fluency.

Our teaching of mathematics covers the key strands identified in the National Curriculum: number, calculation, geometry, measures and statistics.  Understanding mathematical concepts within these areas, and being fluent and confident in using them, are key skills, which support success across the wider curriculum.  It is vital that our pupils learn to make connections, to apply logic, and to use their knowledge and skills to solve increasingly complex problems.  Pupils are encouraged to talk about their mathematical ideas, their workings and their solutions in a classroom culture where being willing to challenge yourself and have a go, without fear of failure, is of the utmost importance.

We follow the White Rose mathematics scheme, which teaches key content in blocks, gradually moving from fluency to reasoning and problem solving, once a concept has been mastered.  Support and challenge are built in, so all pupils are encouraged to see themselves as capable mathematicians and to achieve their best possible outcomes.  Our curriculum supports children with ‘bridging the gap’ between abstract mathematical concepts and concrete representations that they can manipulate and draw up. We use the White Rose Maths Hub Mastery documents to ensure that we have both breadth and depth across our maths curriculum. Through our maths vision, we are passionate and fully committed to developing a balance between the children’s procedural fluency and conceptual understanding.
