French
The aims of Primary Language teaching at Enstone Primary School are to enable all children to:
- understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources
- speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they want to say, including through discussion and asking questions, and continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation
- write at varying length, for different purposes and audiences, using the variety of grammatical structures that they have learnt
- discover and develop an appreciation of a range of writing in the language studied (French)
- develop an enthusiasm for learning languages and become aware of the benefits of understanding and speaking different languages
French is taught from Year 3 upwards, as the key language of our Primary Languages curriculum. Prior to this, children will be exposed to "language tasters" such as learning to say hello/goodbye, or learning to count in a variety of different languages.
Where possible, we bring children's own language experiences into the classroom, whether this be languages spoken at home or phrases and vocabulary they have learned on trips abroad.
Our curriculum plans, based on units from the Twinkl French Scheme, cover topics such as meeting and greeting, hobbies, families and friends, travel and shopping. French speaking is also brought into our classrooms through some of our instructional language (sit down, line up), through taking the registers or ordering meals, and through making requests or asking questions (may I go to the toilet, what is the time?). This helps to keep some of the key vocabulary fresh in our pupils' minds, as well as building confidence in the spoken word.
